Closing the curtain

Seventeen years ago I launched this blog which I had been publishing as a newspaper column. For now it’s time to close the curtain on Sparsely Sage & Timely. In the past two to three months, a bout of Parkinson’s disease has substantially crippled me. My lack of balance when standing and walking pretty much confines me to one floor at home. I can’t drive, and just the walk down to where we park cars is so exhausting I rarely leave home.
I’m increasingly forgetful re basic matters. Just last week I had to tell my youngest stepdaughter that for the moment I couldn’t remember how many times I’ve been married. (Her mother in Guatemala was my fourth wife.) Lynn, my fifth wife, and I are about to start our fourteenth year together.
I knew nothing about Parkinson’s disease until I was diagnosed. Here’s how Google defines it: “Parkinson’s disease is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking.”
However I’ve just started a course of a dopamine-producing medicine. Parkinson’s is associated with lower dopamine production in the brain, so I’m hoping the new med will be as effective as it’s been described by optimists and medical personnel.
In the meantime, I’ll let the curtain close.

Good wishes to you, Dave. Thanks for keeping it going for so long. Getting old ain’t for sissies. I miss seeing you around town. Best wishes.
Your writing has always made me happy, and I will miss your blog.
You are a true legendary character here in Point Reyes.
Your years as owner/editor/publisher of The Point Reyes Light were the golden years of the paper, especially with the winning of the Pulitzer Prize.
I will always remember you in that office upstairs in the old creamery building, and the fun that I had documenting the West Marin softball scene. You would always giggle at the detailed descriptions of the softball photos that I would write.
I appreciated that opportunity to have my photos published, and when I started Planned Feralhood, you gave me all the space I needed to inform the community about our TNR program for the town’s feral cats. It was key in making our program a success.
I send you all my love as a friend, and my admiration for all you have accomplished.
Take good care, and let me know when you would like a visit!
Dave,I will sorely miss this column as your insights, wit, and particular way of looking at West Marin and the world in general brought me joy.As the curtain closes I can only, metaphorically, rise from my seat clapping robustly and shout Bravo!
When it’s time, it’s time. Thanks for lots of good reads over the years.
I’m with Andrew, Dave. As the curtain closes for now I’m standing up, clapping and yelling Bravo. Thank you for all your excellent work, all the lives you’ve touched and being such a witty, bright and shining star and a voice of reason, hope and clarity all these years. It’s an honor to know you and to have worked for you. I know my mother, one of your biggest fans, is cheering alongside me. Wishing you and Lynn the very best, and sending much love. Sarah
Dave, witnessing your greatness through your writing and picturing the world through your keen eye has been amazing, to say the least. I have loved your storytelling since I was little, and I’ve always felt like I’m traveling through time when you tell a story. Thank you for all these years of the blog, for The Light, and for all the lives you have touched as a journalist and person.
It’s an honor to be part of your life, and it’s an honor being your stepdaughter.
It’s an honor to be called your stepdaughter. Hoping the treatment helps and we will see you back here soon.
Dave, I also echo the cheering from the people above!! You have entertained and informed us for so long and we thank you!! I will miss reading your witty writing and then falling down the google rabbit hole while learning more about what you posted. You taught me to love the newspaper and I will always think of you when I have one in my hands! You are a blogging legend, Dave!! Love you so much!
From Carl Nolte, SF Chronicle:
I posted a comment on Dave’s blog but it didn’t post.
Dave is one of my heroes. Not just for the Synanon case but also for his work on the Point Reyes Light and long time friendship.
He’s been the light, as well, for that marvelous community over the hill for his coverage of the immigrant people who came to Point Reyes over the last 150 years and for the rest of us who treasure that island in time.
He’s gotten a bad break, I see. But his legacy will always be part of Point Reyes.
