Titled<em> Our Year In Four<\/em>, it draws upon the nature around our home. I like the poem enough to share it, and I hope you&#8217;ll enjoy it too:<\/p>\n<p>I<br \/>\nBird-call makes us break<br \/>\nour solitude and sleep<br \/>\nto slip within this risen day.<br \/>\nThe water bowl&#8217;s resurgent lake<br \/>\nclear enough for sparrow-sip<br \/>\nthis warming day.<br \/>\nBird-track stars in snow crystals<br \/>\ndeliver us this glistening day.<br \/>\nPrints recede as skimming seeds<br \/>\nhail this breath of day.<\/p>\n<p>II<br \/>\nEmerge from where we go,<br \/>\nhopeless captives<br \/>\nwho fail at hobbling dreams<br \/>\nthat make us quake at what we keep<br \/>\nfrom what we may release<br \/>\nlike birdsong calling in the day.<br \/>\nGaping redwings, shoulders back,<br \/>\nslingshot notes around the meadow,<br \/>\nour neighborly divide their forum.<br \/>\nSwainsons&#8217; swirling flutes<br \/>\nswizzle cross the treetops.<br \/>\nWe cast our husks of tribute,\u00a0<br \/>\nsunflower, millet, suet,<br \/>\nto charm the scrubland gods:<br \/>\nWhile time is light as breath is air,<br \/>\nsend them here, these newborn days.<\/p>\n<p>III<br \/>\nIndigo sky.<br \/>\nNo shoes, no shirt.<br \/>\nNo rules need apply.<br \/>\nBerries lie in beds we made,<br \/>\ntestifying to our pride,<br \/>\nour lustful spring ambition.<br \/>\nLuscious unclaimed virgins<br \/>\nno one ate or tried<br \/>\njumped,<br \/>\nor were they pushed,<br \/>\nfrom overcrowded vines,<br \/>\njuices caking in the dust.<br \/>\nLaboring emmets carry off the spoils<br \/>\nclamber up the stalks;<br \/>\nroving antennae fondle aphid rears:<br \/>\nhoneydew! like cheap, sweet beer.<br \/>\nCrusading leagues of ladybugs<br \/>\narrive to save the plants<br \/>\nfrom habituated ants<br \/>\nwho fight to keep their hooch.<br \/>\nSkirmish on the ragged green,<br \/>\nlunges, bites, maneuvers.<br \/>\nBiology is destiny, we say,<br \/>\nirrelevant to the sun devouring the day.<\/p>\n<p>IV<br \/>\nBring the tools inside, lay them sharp,<br \/>\nalways clean, at rest in the dark.<br \/>\nThe turned earth settles cool above,<br \/>\nwarming continents below.<br \/>\nGive us time to think goodbye<br \/>\nsit on cushioned chairs<br \/>\npuzzle birds their silent pluming flights<br \/>\nwonder how they are.<br \/>\nWhich tilt was final; setting sun decisive?<br \/>\nWe try to reason when they knew: &#8216;now&#8217; not if.<br \/>\nStoring wood for the annual surrender<br \/>\nwe stake the ground on tremors<br \/>\nunbuckling chasms, bargaining again<br \/>\nwe&#8217;ll hear the faintest notes return<br \/>\nsometimes through a murmur, raucous, rising.<br \/>\nEarth heaves, shudders in its own oscillation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"post-footer\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"navigation\">\n<div class=\"aligncenter\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"boxcomments\">\n<div id=\"respond\">\n<form id=\"commentform\" action=\"https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-comments-post.php\" method=\"post\">\n<fieldset>\n<legend>Leave a Comment<\/legend>\n<\/fieldset>\n<\/form>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Caveat lectorem: When readers submit comments, they are asked if they want to receive an email alert with a link to new postings on this blog.
