Like dogs, raccoons confirm each other’s identity by sniffing rear ends, and they don’t hesitate to sniff a skunk’s backside. This skunk raises its tail as if it’s going to spray, but it never does. The raccoons and skunk sometimes shoulder each other as they compete for kibble on our deck. At first, I would occasionally hear faint growls during these matchups, but no more.<\/p>\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-32118\" src=\"https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/3-coons-skunk-500x507.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/3-coons-skunk-500x507.jpg 500w, https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/3-coons-skunk-200x203.jpg 200w, https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/3-coons-skunk-768x778.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/3-coons-skunk-1000x1013.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/3-coons-skunk-148x150.jpg 148w, https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/3-coons-skunk.jpg 1902w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n
When I started photographing them Friday night, the camera’s flashes immediately caught the raccoons’ attention.
