center;\">_______________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>When I first heard the following admonition<\/strong> from some environmental-activist friends, I was skeptical.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" hike or a walk along the beach, the worst litter you can leave behind are the plastic rings that hold the cans together, or so my friends said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The rings can entrap birds and other animals, such activists warn and often display photos of seagulls which had poked at something through one of the rings and then couldn&#8217;t get their heads back out. The composition is so light and dreamy that one San Francisco radio station used to play it every evening at sunset. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S-Xm7s9eGxU\"><strong>Click here to hear<\/strong><strong>. <\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(Sorry about the brief introductory ad.) I never knew what the word <em>Gymnop\u00e9dies<\/em> meant, however, until I finally decided to look it up this week after hearing the music once again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-36465\" src=\"https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hqdefault.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hqdefault.jpg 480w, https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hqdefault-200x150.jpg 200w, https:\/\/sparselysageandtimely.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/hqdefault-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>A Gymnopedia as portrayed on antique Grecian pottery.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>What a surprise!<\/strong>\u00a0<em>Trois Gymnop\u00e9decian <\/em>refers to the <i>gymnopedia,<\/i> or festival of naked young men, which was celebrated every year in ancient Sparta to honor the gods Apollo, Artemis <em>et al<\/em>. The day-long festival concluded with gymnastic exhibitions and frenzied dancing offered to Dionysius. (Fish and Wildlife photo<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Coast Guard<\/strong> at 8:45 a.m. Friday, March 5, received the first alert that a 90-foot vessel, the <em>American Challenger,<\/em> was in trouble near the town of Dillon Beach, according to a state report<em>. <\/em>The<em> Challenger <\/em>had been getting towed south from Puget Sound by the tug <em>Hunter<\/em>, but the tug lost propulsion when a rope became entangled in the propeller. At 1 a.m., Saturday, the vessel grounded on a rocky shoreline near Dillon Beach where it remains, Fish and Wildlife has reported.
